Dianne Gleeson, Institute for Applied Ecology, University of Canberra, Centre for Invasive Species Solutions Advances in DNA-related technology hold significant potential for application to wildlife surveillance, but also come with risks and challenges. An important advance has been the adoption of ancient DNA approaches for the detection of environmental DNA (eDNA). All organisms shed DNA, and much of it finds its way into the environment and can be detected by sampling water, soil, air or faecal material. This approach provides a non-invasive approach to wildlife analysis and holds considerable promise for the detection of cryptic border arrivals, of species post-arrival but in the early phase of the invasion curve, or of the impacts of post-eradication treatments. The main risks lie in ...

A Continent Adrift" full documentary in which we discover how animals that populated this part of the supercontinent Gondwana have evolved as to what the Australian continent adrift in the ocean. The story of the inhabitants of this Terra Australis can be traced back to the distant days when all the continents of the southern hemisphere were one. The world was then a warmer, and more humid place, in which enormous dinosaurs ruled over a zoology in permanent evolution. The remains of that universal jungle can still be seen in the north east of Australia, and are now home to the descendents of the long extinct dinosaurs. The birds are the most numerous species in this green, suffocatingly humid world. Thei...
In this talk, Dr Tanya Wyatt presents an exploratory study into the similarities, differences, and overlaps between the illegal wildlife trade and the illegal drug trade, using original and literature-based research from the Russian Far East and Western Europe, respectively. The purpose of such a comparison is to gain further insight into the illegal wildlife trade through the examination of the more thoroughly studied illegal drug trade. The estimated global size of the markets are given as well as a detailed comparison of the actors involved and the smuggling operations used. This leads to exploration of a possible typology of features that the trades have in common and to discussion of the direct linkages of these two illicit markets. Dr Tanya Wyatt is a Senior Lecturer of Criminolo...

First of three talks for the Animal Justice Party exploring the ACT Government's policy of kangaroo culling in Canberra. Contains 1 minute intro by Geoff Pryor, National Convenor of Animal Justice Party. Text details will be published on candobetter.net. In this video, Sheila Newman, an evolutionary sociologist, makes the following points: "Harvesting, damage mitigation and culling probably actually accelerate population growth in roos because the smaller ones survive and adapt by sexually maturing earlier - which speeds up fertility turnover. Since 2003 DNA studies have shown that ACT and southern NSW roos, both male and female, migrate at significant rates and for longer distances than the ACT model assumes. Migration has probably been mistaken for fertility, rendering ACT roo counts...
